Jan makes her first rib stitches—one happy camper!

I’m a lucky man – my wife Jan is, if not a native aviation fan, indulgent of my aviation passion and has tented in the woods the entire AirVenture week. Her enthusiasm is needlework, and as owners of a rag and tube airplane in need of a recover, she’s been eager for rib stitching instruction.

Much angst, then, when scouring the forum listings for needle and thread classes when none showed. Plenty for PolyFiber coverings, but plain old rib stitching proved impossible to find in the postings. So, on to hoofing it through the extensive AirVenture Forum and Workshop grounds. And there it was, the Builder’s Educational Center, adjacent to the forums in a yellow and blue hangar. Inside are hands-on opportunities for all the classic building techniques and they run all day, every day of “Oshkosh.”

You just have to know where to find them. Sorta makes you wonder what else is going on!

Wallin-Sobeck gives her feet a rest while giving the sort of insider tips only an experienced instructor can. The learning opportunities at Air Venture are tremendous.

Pumping avgas and waxing flight school airplanes got Tom into general aviation in 1973, but the lure of racing cars and motorcycles sent him down a motor journalism career heavy on engines and racing. Today he still writes for peanuts and flies for fun.
