I also like to place the oil filter on top of a plastic disposable drinking cup for 24-48 hours before cutting it open. This makes a tidier procedure by draining a significant amount of the oil out of the filter, prior to cutting it open.
Another tip is to put the filter media in a vise and press the oil out. Makes it easier to spot tiny specs of metal.
