I admit it. I’m frugal and I chose my fuel stops mostly by finding the “cheapest route”, with a quick check of on-line reviews to ensure that others weren’t reporting broken credit card machines or other deal breakers. So, for this trip home I selected Yankton, South Dakota. Low fuel price and nice reviews. What I didn’t know until I arrived was that the local EAA Chapter 1029 had partnered with the airport to put out a lunch spread (donations appreciated) and open the showers.
A small covey of members welcomed pilots and provided a chance to debrief and decompress from the flight from Oshkosh. What a pleasure on my long cross-country trip to western Nevada! As I was preparing to leave, two more RVs came in for fuel…more opportunity for trading notes and admiring each other’s planes.
There are special airports like this one around the country (at least within about 500 miles from Oshkosh), pulling out the red carpet for pilots flying to and from AirVenture. Which gems did you visit this year?
